I Thought I Knew Everything About Raising Kids...then I had my own
Before I was a Mom, I was a Mental Health Therapist who worked exclusively with children and mothers. I taught parenting classes and helped build healthy families.
So when I got pregnant with my first son, I knew I was ready. I had this parenting thing in the bag. I was going to be great!
I was wrong...
I wasn't prepared for the emotional turmoil that motherhood brings. I found myself trapped in a deep Mom Funk because I forgot how to take care of myself. I was lazy, frustrated, lonely, and emotional.
It wasn't long before my funk caused me to become a yelling, angry, Hulk mom.
One morning I screamed so much at my three year old that my throat hurt for days after. It was that moment that I knew I had to stop.
So I dug through my dusty counseling books and notes and started using some of the therapeutic techniques I learned when I was working as a therapist and I slowly pulled myself out of the Funk.
Today, I'm happier, calmer, and my children are happier because of my change.
Am I perfect? Nope. I still yell from time to time, I'll probably always be a yeller. But I'm not yelling as much, and I haven't turned into the Hulk Mom in years.
Overall, I'm a pretty Happy Mom, and you can be one too.
